The great patriot and Revolutionary War statesman, Ben Franklin, left a testamentary trust of 1,000 pounds sterling which was to accumulate principal and interest for a period of 200 years, and then be distributed to two designated beneficiaries, namely, the City of Philadelphia and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
At the 200th year, when the value of the fund exceeded $1 million, the Pennsylvania Legislature determined that Pennsylvania’s share of the Franklin Trust should be distributed to existing Pennsylvania community foundations. In 1993, Adams County Foundation received $22,000.00 for a permanently endowed fund to support the Fund for Adams County.
