Thanks to a “forever gift” from the Selby family, the Adams County Community Foundation awards charitable grants each year to benefit the community of Littlestown. This year, grants total $36,800. The late Dick Selby created the permanent charitable endowment to honor his parents, Mary and Bernard, and the family’s commitment to their hometown.

Gettysburg attorney David K. James III, who worked with Dick Selby to create his charitable fund at the Community Foundation, said, “This permanent endowment is a beautiful way to memorialize the Selby family. Each year we are reminded of this family’s community spirit and generosity. Through this charitable fund, they continue to occupy a special place in the hearts of Littlestown.”

The 2021 grants from The Fund for Littlestown, made possible by the Bernard, Mary and Richard Selby Family Memorial Fund include:

Adams County Office for Aging – $4,000
This grant will enable the Littlestown Senior Center to stock up on personal protective equipment and supplies for their online offerings: educational classes, exercise routines, craft projects and demonstrations.

Hanover Area YMCA/Littlestown Branch – $5,000
This grant will provide subsidies for families who need help to enroll their children in summer camp, which this year includes extended hours to accommodate working parents.

Littlestown Area Garden Club – $1,000
Neighborhood signs express residents’ pride and community spirit. The Garden Club will use this grant to install a new welcome sign for Littlestown and spruce up the surrounding garden.

Littlestown Baseball-Softball for Youth – $4,000
This grant will pay for routine fence repairs and equipment replacements, thus keeping the participation fee low so that more young people can participate.

Littlestown Elementary Football Association – $1,000
This grant will pay for helmets and other equipment as well as uniforms for players and cheerleaders.

New Hope Ministries – $2,500
Since the economic downturn associated with the pandemic, New Hope Ministries has seen an increasing number of people seeking food and emergency cash assistance. This grant will support their relief efforts in Littlestown.

Ruth’s Harvest – Littlestown – $5,000
Ruth’s Harvest provides two days’ of healthy meals and snacks to food-insecure children as they leave school at the end of the week. In recognition of increased economic pressure on families, they will add fresh produce and milk to the packages. Several times a year they also distribute clothing to students in need. This grant will support their work for Littlestown families.

The Selbys also requested that St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church and Alpha Fire Company #20 receive annual grants from the Fund.
