Dolores Yvonne Miller was born on August 4, 1932 in Garrett County, MD and was the middle child of 5 born to Floyd and Genevieve Miller. Dolores became known as Doey in her childhood when her older sister couldn’t pronounce Dolores.

Doey attended LaVale Elementary and then grades 4-7 at St Patrick’s in Mt. Savage, Maryland. The family moved to Emmitsburg and Doey attended St. Euphemia in 8th grade, then attended St. Joseph’s in grades 9-12. She attended and graduated from Towson State Teacher’s College from 1950 to 1954.

Doey was married to Robert Gillelan on July 31, 1954 in Emmitsburg MD and the two later relocated to Biglerville in 1956.

Doey began her teaching career at Forest Elementary School in Silver Springs, MD and was forced to resign when she became pregnant in 1955. She continued her teaching career after her 3 children were aged 7 and older.

Doey started in the Upper Adams School District in 1967 at Arendtsville on a part time basis teaching 6th grade. In 1970 she moved to Biglerville Elementary School where she taught 6th grade until her retirement in 1989. She felt like students should be strong in English, Math and Reading at an early age.

While Doey enjoyed her time at Upper Adams School District, her retirement was enriched when she became involved volunteering at the Literacy Council, Meals on Wheels, the Cancer Society and Homebound Ministries. She was a member at St. Francis Xavier where she was involved in bible study and was a lector. She enjoyed golfing and the time spent with her friends from Biglerville and Gettysburg.

Doey was a good cook and the dishes most remembered by family and friends were her renditions of beef burgundy, beef stroganoff, potato salad, cole-slaw and Boston crème Pie.
